You have tons of talent and passion, so why not learn how to start a rock band? All of the wonderful bands of the world started when someone just like you got an idea to start their own band. While it’s true that some bands only come out with one big hit and then seem to fizzle away, other bands have topped the charts for several years. Depending on your skills, motivation, passion, and drive, you could very well develop a wonderful career and maybe even one day experience fortune and fame.
While a rock band certainly isn’t a traditional business, make no mistake, when done right, it is a business, not just a hobby.
What are your skills?
One requirement to having a rock band is obviously having musicians and singers. Are you good at either or both of these things? Is it common for people to ask you to play or sing for them? Have you ever performed in public before and gotten a positive response?
It can be pretty difficult at times to assess your own skills and talent, but asking someone who is unbiased – perhaps a teacher at a music school for feedback will help you to fully grasp where you are with your talent. If you discover areas that need work, work on them. In the meantime, continue to practice often and perform if at all possible.
Another question to ask yourself when you want to learn how to start a rock band is whether or not you’re organized. Rock bands tend to have pretty hectic schedules. You will need to have a person who makes sure that all of the musical instruments show up to gigs and everyone has the right place and time for a gig. Imagine losing a well-paying gig just because you were so unorganized that you had the wrong day.
One very important thing to keep in mind is that someone will need to make sure that the band is getting paid for their shows. If being assertive like this isn’t a strength of yours, find someone who is reliable and able to handle this sort of situation for you.
Since you will need to practice as a band as much as possible, you’re going to need a good place to rehearse. Once you’ve gotten your music to a point where you’re happy with it, record it onto CDs so that others can hear. You don’t have to own a lavish recording studio to achieve this. With some very basic things like a recording computer, microphone, software, and monitors, you have everything you need to start your own basic studio.
Once you’ve developed a CD that is professional sounding and one that you and the rest of the band are happy with, you can begin to market your band. There are several different ways to go about this. An obvious choice would be to send a copy of the CD to recording studios. After all, they are the ones whose attention you really want to grab. Try selling to your local market as well – things like night clubs, weddings, etc.
True success in the music industry can be very difficult, but if you’ve got a true passion for your music and talent, with a lot of hard work and dedication, you’ll know how to start a rock band in a successful and enjoyable way.
